Chapter 11

The evening waned as I entered the interrogation room at the sheriff’s department, its starkness a far cry from the cozy ambiance of our bookstore. Inspector Sterling Pratt, a paragon of precision, orchestrated the scene with Cassius Morgenthrall by his side, whose tousled dark hair bore witness to the chaos that was our life.

Tish Tishabee and her camera crew busied themselves behind the one-way glass, setting up for what promised to be Grimstone Grove’s most memorable broadcast as a future documentary.

The aura mirror lay draped under a cloth, its frame’s outline casting an eerie shadow on the interrogation table. Cassius gave it space, his hands tightening ever so slightly each time he spared it a glance. That mirror had stirred more trouble than anyone could’ve expected. And here we were, about to rouse it again.

Blanche zipped around the room, unable to contain her energy, with her hair potioned a vibrant blue that matched her bubbling excitement. “This is going to be spectacular,” she declared, hands coming together in a clap. “Think of what we might learn!”

Violet maintained her distance, her posture as sharp as the collar on her blouse. “Let’s not jump the gun,” she warned us. “We’re following procedures for a reason.”

Elzadora lounged atop our pile of reference books, her fur pristine and groomed. The tip of her tail quivered as she stretched to see better. “Just remember who’s really running the show,” she said, locking eyes with Sterling in a silent duel of wills.

Sterling acknowledged Elzadora with a small nod and a tight smile, an unspoken agreement reached between them within these walls.

Cassius came over, concern softening his features. “You sure about this?” he murmured.

I straightened up. “We need answers,” I told him with resolve. “It’s our best chance to get them before anyone else gets hurt.”

After ensuring Tish and her team were ready and all precautions were taken care of, Sterling signaled toward the viewing room. It was time to face whatever secrets that mirror held and capture our foray into unknown magic on film.

We joined Tish in the viewing room where she stood draped in scarves and oversized glasses, a stark contrast to the enchantress who once charmed viewers with impeccable grace.

“Tish,” I addressed her gently as she turned our way. “We’re here to find out the truth, but also to offer our support.” I gestured toward Blanche and Violet. “When all this is over, we’ll do everything we can to help you heal from what happened with Hyacinth’s products.”

“Thank you,” she said, her voice steady, although her fingers quivered near her concealed eyes, a fleeting glint against the dark lenses betrayed emotions kept at bay. She cleared her throat softly.

Violet offered a nod of solidarity while Blanche smiled at Tish with an almost regal confidence. Elzadora simply snorted and settled herself on a lower shelf beneath the observation window.

“We should begin.” Sterling’s voice came through the intercom, clear and devoid of any unnecessary frills. His command was like a beacon in the bustling room, pulling us into focus.
